Nothing beats an evening at the theatre. Except maybe an evening at the theatre preceded or followed by dinner, drinks, and/or a spot of shopping. Each week we will share our top picks for enhancing your theatre experience at venues across the city.

This week: Bluma Appel Theatre

The Bluma, part of the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, is home to performing arts organizations across the city, namely Canadian Stage, who has produced its mainstage shows there for over twenty-five years. Built in 1970 as the Theatre, it was renamed after renovations in the early eighties in recognition of the generous financial contributions of arts activist Bluma Appel.

Dining & Drinks

Terroni

Classic. Delicious. An institution. There isn’t really one singular selling point. The fact is: there’s no reason not to go. With an atmosphere that makes you feel at home, and food that makes you feel like you’re in Italy, it’s always a treat eating here. And don’t you deserve a treat?

Planta Burger

Few things are better in this world than a good burger. And Planta Burger, being vegan, means everyone can enjoy the splendour of a great patty between two slices of bread. It’s perfect for grabbing a quick bite before a show, especially in the summer when their patio is in full swing. And if you’re feeling crazy, sign up to their email list for details on their weekly “secret burger.”

Amano

For years I would have avoided sending even my worst enemy into the construction hellzone that was Union Station. So I’m as surprised as anyone that I’m sitting here recommending people head there for dinner. But Amano is worth it. It’s one of the first of many restaurants that will open as Union transforms into a respected culinary destination. With fresh homemade pasta made from locally-sourced ingredients, its menu is traditional at its core with inventive twists by chef Michael Angeloni. And it’s all so, so good.

Sukothai

If you’re looking for high quality, authentic, flavourful Thai food, look no further. The dishes are inspired by the food of co-owner Nuit Regular’s childhood, and they never disappoint. Go with an appetite.

From south/west:

Head west toward QEW
Merge onto Gardiner Expy
Take the York St. exit toward Bay St. / Yonge St.
Slight left toward Harbour St. (signs for Yonge St./Queens Quay)
Slight right at Harbour St.
Slight left at Yonge St.
Take the 1st right onto the Esplanade
Take the 1st left onto Scott St.
Take the 2nd right onto Front St. E.

From north/east:

Head southwest on Don Valley Pkwy
Continue on Gardiner Expy
Take the exit toward Yonge St.
Merge onto Yonge St.
Turn right at the Esplanade
Take the 1st left onto Scott St.
Take the 2nd right onto Front St. E.

Exit Union Station on the south side of Front St. and walk east along Front St. The theatre is on the south side of Front St., one block east of Yonge St.
