Casting Announcement: The Company Theatre’s John
The Company Theatre has announced the cast of their upcoming Canadian premiere production of Annie Baker’s John, directed by Jonathan Goad. John is the story of a young couple, Elias and Jenny, who escape to a bed and breakfast to try to mend their crumbling relationship.
Returning to the Toronto stage for the first time in over two years is four-time Dora Award–winning actor Nancy Beatty. Nancy is best known for her work at Tarragon and Factory theatres, where she starred in many of George F. Walker’s plays. She has also won two Gemini Awards for her television work and was a regular on Ken Finkleman’s The Newsroom. In John, Nancy will take on the central role of Mertis, the mysterious and eccentric bed and breakfast proprietor.
Playing Mertis’s best friend Genevieve is veteran actor Nora McLellan. Nora spent twenty-six seasons at the Shaw and Stratford festivals. Some of her most memorable roles include Mama Rose in Gypsy, Valeska in Music for Contortionist, and Hagar Shipley in The Stone Angel.
Philip Riccio, co-AD of The Company Theatre, will play the role of Elias. Philip was last seen on stage in 2015, in Canadian Stage’s Harper Regan and the Crow’s Theatre and The Company Theatre co-production of The Seagull.
Rounding out the cast and making her professional stage debut is Loretta Yu as Jenny. Loretta has worked extensively in film and television, spending the last two years starring in the television series Blood and Water.
Performances start on January 29, 2017, and run until February 19, 2017.
